Integrated Security for Federal Government

Integrate security for easier compliance with federal regulations.

Federal security means more than compliance; it also means information assurance. The Cisco Self-Defending Network can help your organization manage risk and new threats to federal security, a top priority as you comply with Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) regulations. As part of a long-term strategy to deliver federal security through threat control and containment, the Cisco Self-Defending Network helps government agencies:

  • Use existing network resources to deliver intelligent information
  • Pro actively manage, monitor, and mitigate risk using automated methods
  • Realize a greater return on technology investments while reducing federal security costs

What Is Information Assurance?

Information assurance is delivered by network-based security, which helps agencies comply with federal regulations and provides an architectural platform for proactive, automated, real-time threat management.

A new generation of interactive business communication and collaboration technologies provides tremendous productivity and flexibility gains for organizations of all kinds. But this unprecedented connectivity also unleashes new, complex security risks, including:

Increased exposure to security threats — Ubiquitous access to Web-enabled applications and services enables users to work from anywhere, anytime—but also places agencies at risk anywhere, anytime.

An eroding network perimeter — The traditional network barriers that separated trusted from untrusted and “inside” from “outside” are now disappearing.

Evolving threats — Information attacks of the past were largely an issue of cyber-vandalism, with hackers primarily looking for fame. Today’s attacks are a profit-driven business, often controlled by organized crime.

The TIC Initiative

The TIC initiative will improve the federal government's overall Internet communication situational awareness while providing incident-response capability in the case of an external cyber attack. This is accomplished through the reduction of external connections and the establishment of centralized gateway monitoring at a select group of Trusted Internet Connection Access Providers (TICAPs). Recently, departments and agencies had to select their preferred type of TICAP by defining themselves as follows:

Single Service Provider: Departments and agencies that propose to function as a TICAP and provide services to customers internal to their organization only. (This paper focuses on solutions for Single Service Provider TICAPs).

Multi Service Provider: Departments and agencies that propose to function as a TICAP and provide shared services to internal customers and customers outside of their own organizations.

Seeking Service: Departments and agencies that propose to receive services from an approved TICAP.

Components of a Security Solution

The Cisco Self-Defending Network is integrated throughout the network with the expertise of [MyCompany].  Listed below are a few of the key features available.

Firewall
A reliable firewall is the hallmark of a secure network. Networks support sensitive, crucial applications and processes, and provide a common infrastructure for converged data, voice, and video services; firewall security is a primary concern. Instead of providing only point products that set a base level of security, Cisco embeds firewall security throughout the network and integrates security services in all of its products. Firewall security becomes a transparent, scalable, and manageable aspect of the agency infrastructure.

Attack and Intrusion Prevention
Business networks of all sizes face increasingly sophisticated attacks that can impede productivity, obstruct access to applications and resources, and disrupt communications. Because of compliance regulations and consumer privacy laws, corporations must now add a new set of network security priorities that minimize legal liability, protect brand reputation and safeguard intellectual property.

Virtual Private Networks
With SSL and IPsec virtual private networks (VPNs), agencies can securely connect remote offices and remote users using cost-effective, third-party Internet access.  VPNs provide the highest possible level of security through encryption and authentication technologies that protect data traversing the VPN from unauthorized access.  Organizations can take advantage of the easy-to-provision Internet infrastructure to quickly add new sites or users, dramatically increasing the reach of their networks without significantly expanding infrastructure.
